It is difficult to discuss chores as household chores with children. It is difficult for children because they want a chore-free environment. It is difficult for busy parents because they need to find the right task for their child, teach them how to complete it correctly and follow up to ensure that the chores are completed.
Getting kids to do chores without complaining or whining can be difficult. The good news is that chores are shared with the entire family! Children’s responsibility is far more important than we thought. Research shows that children who have chores to do at home as children grow up are happier.
This is why we have the most age-appropriate chores!
Whatever the season, a routine is a great way to organize your life.
My beloved routine!
My children are expected to start a new set of household chores daily as part of their daily routine.
Yes, CHORES.
The word has a negative connotation that I believe is unfair. Every family member has a role in running/maintaining the household. Each of my children plays a part in this, as do I. This sense of responsibility should be taught to them as an early life lesson so they do not go out into the world without a purpose.
KIDS CHOOSE BY AGE
My children’s chores vary each year depending on their grades and maturity levels. You, as a mother, know what your child can and cannot handle.
Younger children may require you to make chores enjoyable as they form these habits. Older children can do their laundry themselves.
It is important to remember that even if they do a terrible job, it is okay. Show patience and a positive work ethic. This lesson of practical skills will be more valuable to them than clean bathrooms.
Do not let them whine or complain. It is important to maintain a positive attitude and lead by example. I expect it from my children and reinforce that expectation with positive reinforcement. It is easier to accept family chores as part of your daily routine the earlier you begin with them.
These are some age-appropriate chore suggestions for each age group. Remember that you are the best judge of your child’s abilities.
What are the chores a child should have?
Age-appropriate chores teach children the importance of chores and how to manage their time. The number of chores a child does and how long they do them will depend on their age.
To help you plan your chore time:
Children 2-7 years old can spend as much as 10 minutes daily doing chores.
Older Children (8-11) might spend 15 minutes per day doing chores but may have one or two weekly projects like changing sheets, mowing the lawn, etc.
Teens might have a longer chore schedule of up to 30 minutes per day, with some weekly projects.
